Body Mine began with a love affair with Polaroid type 55 film which gives a negative as well as a positive and can be developed in a sodium sulfite solution – no darkroom needed, can be done in a bucket. The film is 4 x 5 inches - which needs a 4 x 5 camera and when I found such a camera in a friend's attic, I used it. It's a somewhat cumbersome camera to hold and I found I wanted to turn it on myself. So that's how these start, snippets of me followed by my hand holding charcoal. I like the confluence, and the places I can go.
The juxtaposition of the photo and the charcoal drawing - sometimes paint - is what I love about these. The marriage of painting/drawing and the photographic style and process build a deep complexity for me. Looks great on fine art paper!
